What Is Involved in a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal may sound intimidating, but this common procedure is much easier than you may think. Inside your tooth is a tissue known as pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When your tooth is first developing, the pulp is an essential component, as it helps the roots of your tooth grow properly. Once the tooth is fully developed, this pulp is no longer necessary.

If this pulp becomes infected or inflamed, we may recommend a root canal treatment to remove the pulp. Damaged root pulp can leave room for bacteria to grow in the tooth. In turn, this may cause a painful abscess at the root of the tooth. This could produce many unpleasant issues, including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling of the neck, face, or head
  • Drainage through the damaged tooth into the mouth
  • Bone loss at the root of the tooth.

To complete the root canal treatment, Dr. Fereidouni will begin by administering a local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Using a small drill, he will create a small hole in the top of the tooth to access the pulp. After removing the damaged pulp with small files, Dr. Fereidouni may smooth the inner chamber of the tooth, rinsing and disinfecting this area to help prevent any further problems.

Once the inner chamber of the tooth is clean and dry, Dr. Feredouni will fill it will a substance similar to rubber. A temporary filling is placed over the top of the tooth at the end of this procedure. We will then schedule a second visit to place a permanent crown over the top of the tooth.

How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal Treatment?

If you’ve been experiencing dental pain of any kind, we encourage you to make an appointment at West Broadway Dentist as soon as possible to help diagnose the issue. Some signs that may indicate the need for a root canal treatment include:

  • Severe pain when chewing
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Tenderness or swelling of the gums
  • A pimple on the gums
  • Pain from hot or cold items in the mouth that persists after the item is removed.

We can help identify the cause of these and other dental issues, and let you know when a root canal treatment is necessary. Dr. Fereidouni offers a conservative approach to dental care, recommending only those procedures that are essential to your dental health and comfort.

What Is the Recovery Process After a Root Canal Treatment?

Most root canals take less than two hours to complete. Patients typically report that pain is much more severe before the treatment than it is afterwards. Over-the-counter pain medications can help manage most pain that you may experience after the root canal. This mild discomfort should resolve within a few days.

If you’re experiencing tooth pain you suspect is the result of an infected or damaged root canal, book an appointment with West Broadway Dentist as soon as possible. We’ll help you get to the bottom of your discomfort and develop a personalized treatment plan that will restore your dental health and comfort.
