Gum disease prevention
Gum disease is a serious oral health problem.
It can cause lasting overall health problems and pain. Plus it can negatively affect how you look and feel. At West Broadway Dentist, as part of your oral health program, we carefully measure the health of your gums and the bones that support healthy, functional teeth. We’ll identify any existing problem areas and educate you on how to improve the overall health of your gums and mouth. And if we spot any hard deposits of bacteria on your gums, be assured that our skilled hygienist will gently and comfortably remove it using an ultrasonic cleaner. It’s fast, comfortable and incredibly affective.
Oral cancer screening
Oral cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening illness.
However, early detection of oral cancer increases the five-year survival rate from 52% to 80%. At West Broadway Dentist we use the scientifically proven VELscope Mucosal Examination system to detect signs of oral cancer. The VELscope system is painless and comfortable. It involves shining a blue light in your mouth so that our dental expert can detect lesions that may indicate cancer. In the event we do find a lesion, we are able to photograph it under blue light, measure it and follow up to provide the appropriate treatment.
Without rigid, diligent dental care, tooth decay can occur. Your West Broadway Dentist will look for signs of tooth decay during your regular dental checks. Signs of decay, such as brown or black spots may be spotted and examined more closely using X-rays.
In the event tooth decay is detected, your West Broadway Dentist may recommend we keep an eye on it (if it’s small) or recommend a filling to avoid further decay and to preserve the tooth. If a cavity is not filled, it can get bigger and cause pain and long-term the tooth may even have to be removed.
To fill a cavity your West Broadway Dentist may freeze the area of the tooth to be filled (using a local anesthetic) so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Following this they will remove all traces of decay from your tooth, shape the hole in your tooth and fill it. Your West Broadway Dentist will recommend either a metal filling or a white tooth coloured filling. This procedure can usually be completed in one appointment.
Tooth Decay Prevention
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. Most tooth decay in children and teens occur on these surfaces and this method of prevention is highly effective and
recommended by our West Broadway Dentists. Sealants can last for as long as five to ten years.
Root canal treatment
Sometimes the nerve in your tooth becomes infected.
Without treatment the tooth can become abscessed, you will suffer pain and likely lose the tooth. To avoid this, your West Broadway Dentist will recommend and perform a root canal procedure. To perform a root canal, your West Broadway Dentist may freeze the area of the infected tooth (using a local anesthetic) so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Then your dental expert will make an opening in the tooth to reach the root canal and remove the damaged pulp, clean and enlarge the root canal. After the canal has been thoroughly cleaned your dental expert will fill and seal the canal. Finally your dental expert will fill the opening of your tooth. In some cases, your West Broadway Dentist may recommend a crown. The root canal procedure can usually be completed in one appointment but in some cases follow up appointments may be required to restore the appearance of your tooth.
Despite our best efforts, from time to time teeth must be extracted.
Reasons include tooth decay where the decay has destroyed enough of the tooth structure to render it non-restorable or because of serious impacting. E.g., the extraction of wisdom teeth is often performed to make way for regular permanent teeth. At West Broadway Dentist we understand you may feel some concern about an extraction and we go out of our way to make the process quick, painless and as stress free as possible.
To extract your tooth, your West Broadway Dentist will freeze the area of the tooth to be removed (using a local anesthetic) so you will not feel any pain during the procedure. If necessary, you will be provided an oral sedative to make your appointment comfortable. Following this they will carefully and gently remove your damaged or impacted tooth. Your West Broadway Dentist will recommend follow up treatment to avoid movement or deterioration of your other teeth. The tooth extraction procedure can usually be completed in one appointment.
